Designing with Daylight

Light is the first material we design with.

Daylight falling across a plaster wall

Daylight changes everything it touches. The same room can feel generous at nine in the morning and close by four in the afternoon. Designing with daylight means planning for that change rather than fighting it.

Start with orientation

Before we draw a single window, we study the site and the path of the sun across the seasons. Living spaces that face the right way need less correction later, and they feel naturally comfortable.

Openings with intent

Not every opening has to be large. A narrow slot can frame a view, a high window can wash a wall with soft light, and a deep reveal can calm glare. Each decision changes how a room is used.

A note on shade

Good daylighting is as much about shade as it is about glass. Overhangs, screens, and planting all help balance brightness with comfort.
